Why I Quit Using Deodorant 2 Years Ago

Today I’m going to talk about something that isn’t exactly crystals nor energy healing, but it does have to do with your health. And technically baking soda IS a mineral, so it could be considered a crystal. Either way, we need to not only take care of ourselves spiritually, but also our physical body. We should apply optimal health practice however we can, and that’s why I want to teach you how to make your own DIY Deodorant today with just 2, or 3, common products from your kitchen.

So,that headline might be a tad misleading, I actually still use a sort of deodorant, but it’s not store bought, I just make it myself here at home. There are plenty of reasons out there to not use antiperspirant or deodorant, one that comes to mind is that the FDA actually considers deodorant an OTC DRUG!! Seriously, a drug, and apparently there are kids out there who huff the stuff to get high. Antiperspirant just sounds scary, and rightfully so, aluminum and zinc are used to block, clog and damage the pores in your skin. This has actually lead to some, men and women, getting breast cancer. I could go on and on about why it’s harmful, but I’m not here to do scare you. What I do what to tell you about is my DIY alternative to deodorant and antiperspirant.

Now I just mentioned all the scary stuff, but that’s not actually why I quit wearing deodorant. For me, I noticed that it just didn’t work, and by the end of the day, I’d have BO. I would understand if I was getting super sweaty by working out several hours a day, but that’s not the case with me on most days. So why was I still so stinky? I decided to try some alternative options.

The first was going au natural, and that did not work at all. It was during the same time I was trying to do the no-poo hair method, so I was just looking homeless, if I’m being honest.

I then tried lime – didn’t work.

ACV – eh, sorta worked, but not for long. I just smelled like a balsamic vinegar salad. Not pleasant.

Then I read one of the bajillion things that makes coconut oil so awesome is that it can be used at a natural deodorant. I also read that baking soda can be. I decided to mix the two and make my own concoction and see what happened, and you know what? It WORKED. Not only does it work, it’s CHEAP and when I apply it after a shower, I can literally go DAYS and still not have BO. FYI, I happen to live in Hawaii, where the climate is hot and humid, so I can get pretty sweaty from just being outside for 10 min. Yet still, no stink!

So how do I make this miracle BO zapper? Easy! And I mean REAL easy, cause I’m pretty lazy.

First you’re going to need a few things out of the kitchen: coconut oil, baking soda, rosewater (optional), a small bowl, a mixing spoon & a container to store the mix in.

I eyeball everything, so I am not going to have any exact amounts of how much of each to put in. I take about 3 TB of coconut oil and put it in the bowl. I then sprinkle baking soda and mix until it has the consistency of a thick paste. I spray a few squirts of rosewater, and mix again. Once it’s all mixed, I put it in the tiny Tupperware container and now I have enough deodorant for 6 months, easy.

Enough for 6 months!!

When applying I use my pointer finger and get a small dollop and apply to each underarm and rub it in completely. You’re going to have some grainy feeling from the baking soda, but just wipe it off. You really don’t need a lot at all.  And that is it, it really is that simple.

If you try it out, let me know what you think! I really don’t miss deodorant AT ALL, but I’m most excited how long I can go without feeling gross and offensive.

    1. I’ve actually put a drop of essential oil in it before to add a nice, subtle, scent.
